Haddad: Government erred in appointing a minister who weakens environmental oversight.

Following the collapse of a dam in Brumadinho (MG), former mayor of São Paulo Fernando Haddad criticized the choice of Ricardo Salles to head the Ministry of the Environment made by the Jair Bolsonaro government; "Bad choice: the government erred in appointing someone as Minister of the Environment whose positions are contrary to what the country needs. Bolsonaro, until yesterday, only talks about loosening oversight and facilitating licensing. We'll see now," said Haddad; the minister has already criticized Ibama, signaling that the agency is a "fine factory."

247 - Following the collapse of a dam in Brumadinho (MG), former mayor of São Paulo Fernando Haddad criticized the choice of Ricardo Salles to head the Ministry of the Environment made by the Jair Bolsonaro government. The environmental crime left at least 9 dead and more than 300 missing.

"Bad choice: the government erred in appointing someone as Minister of the Environment whose positions are contrary to what the country needs. Until yesterday, Bolsonaro only talked about loosening oversight and making licensing easier. We'll see now," Haddad said on Twitter.

"Three years after Mariana, it's Brumadinho's turn. Another Vale dam collapse. And there are still people who defend the relaxation of environmental licensing, self-licensing by companies, the weakening of Ibama, etc., etc.," he said.

Salles has already criticized Ibama, signaling that the agency is a "fine factory." He was the Secretary of the Environment in the Geraldo Alckmin government in São Paulo and was accused of violating environmental laws. Since 2017, he has been the target of a lawsuit filed by the Public Prosecutor's Office (MP-SP) on charges of illegally changing the management plan of an environmental protection area in the Tietê River floodplain, "with the clear intention of benefiting economic sectors."
