The pension reform bill presented to Congress by the Jair Bolsonaro government, which makes it more difficult for workers to access retirement benefits and reduces the Continuous Benefit Payment (BPC) for impoverished elderly people, also stipulates the same contribution period for men and women with disabilities; the Proposed Constitutional Amendment (PEC) also foresees the end of age-based retirement for this segment of the workforce.
247 - The pension reform bill presented to Congress by the Jair Bolsonaro government, which makes it more difficult for workers to access retirement benefits and reduces the Continuous Benefit Payment (BPC) for impoverished elderly people, also stipulates the same contribution period for men and women with disabilities. According to the proposal, the contribution period for those with severe disabilities will be 20 years, 25 years for moderate disabilities, and 35 years for mild disabilities. The Proposed Constitutional Amendment (PEC) also foresees the end of age-based retirement for this segment of the population.
Under current rules, people with disabilities can opt for retirement at age 60 for men and age 55 for women, provided they have contributed to Social Security for a minimum of 15 years. If retirement is based on length of service, the granting of benefits also varies according to the degree of disability.
In the most severe cases, the contribution period is 25 years for men and 20 for women. If the disability is considered moderate, the contribution period is 29 and 24 years for men and women, respectively. In cases of mild disability, the contribution period is 33 years (men) or 28 years (women).
