Bolsonaro's government seeks Italy's support in action against bishops.

After confirming that the so-called "progressive clergy" of the Catholic Church is being monitored, the Jair Bolsonaro government is preparing a diplomatic offensive with the Italian government to try to block direct attacks against the government's social and environmental policies during the Synod on the Amazon, organized by Pope Francis and to be held in Rome in October; the Bolsonaro government is also expected to hold its own symposium in September, also in Rome, to demonstrate "Brazil's concern and care for the Amazon."

247 - After confirming that the so-called "progressive clergy" of the Catholic Church is being monitored, the Jair Bolsonaro government is preparing a diplomatic offensive with the Italian government to intercede with the Holy See to try to block direct attacks against the government's social and environmental policies during the Synod on the Amazon, organized by Pope Francis and to be held in Rome in October.

This Sunday, the Institutional Security Office (GSI) released a statement confirming a "functional concern with some points on the Synod's agenda" that deal with aspects that, in a way, affect national sovereignty" (Read more in the article). Brazil 247Among the topics expected to be discussed at the event are issues sensitive to the Bolsonaro government, such as the treatment of indigenous and quilombola communities and climate change. These topics are seen within the Brazilian government as being the result of a "leftist agenda."

According to the newspaper The State of S. PaulThe Brazilian government wants to leverage its strong relations with the Italian government, which have been in full swing since the extradition of Italian national Cesare Battisti, to seek support from the Italian and Vatican ambassadors in Brazil – Antonio Bernardini and Archbishop Giovanni D'Aniello, respectively – to publicize government actions in the areas that will be debated during the event. The ambassadors would also be responsible for pressuring the Catholic Church leadership to minimize potential damage to the country's image due to the extensive international coverage expected for the event.

In an attempt to preempt the October event, the Bolsonaro government is also expected to hold its own symposium in September, also in Rome, to show the world "Brazil's concern and care for the Amazon."
