Airline company to be investigated for environmental damage caused by its landing and takeoff operations.

Fernando Porfírio_247 - The São Paulo court has ordered an investigation into Gol Linhas Aéreas. The Public Prosecutor's Office wants to investigate alleged environmental damage caused by the company's aircraft landing and takeoff operations at Cumbica International Airport in Guarulhos.

The case had been dismissed by a judge in Guarulhos. The Public Prosecutor's Office appealed to the Court of Justice, which ordered the reopening of the proceedings to investigate the airline's responsibility for the environmental pollution. The prosecutor's office wants Gol to be ordered to compensate society for the environmental damage caused by its aircraft.

The investigation by the Public Prosecutor's Office identified the existence of actions harmful to the environment, the emission of toxic gases and global warming caused by aircraft landing, taxiing and takeoff maneuvers, and the need for compensation for environmental damage.

The Public Prosecutor's Office proposed the signing of a Conduct Adjustment Agreement (TAC) with several airlines operating at São Paulo's international airport, containing an environmental compensation program, but none of them signed the agreement.

The Court of Justice ordered an expert assessment. The Public Prosecutor's Office alleges a link between the airline's activity and the production of greenhouse gases. In its appeal, the Public Prosecutor's Office requests that Gol be ordered to promote reforestation around Guarulhos Airport so that the vegetation absorbs some of the pollution produced there.

The decision by the Environmental Chamber of the Court of Justice is the first on global warming and recognizes the existence of environmental impact from aircraft landing and takeoff operations, as well as the duty of airlines to mitigate environmental damage.
