PT Agency - The president of the Workers' Party, deputy Gleisi Hoffmann, and the party leader in the senate, Humberto Costa, met this Tuesday (19) in Brussels with representatives of the European Left Group in the European Parliament. The meeting was attended by representatives of the left from Portugal (PCP and Bloco de Esquerda), Spain (Podemos), France (France Unbowed), Ireland (Sinn Féin) and Italy (Refundazioni) among other parties from different countries, who discussed the political situation in Brazil and the unjust imprisonment of former president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Several MEPs expressed interest in visiting former President Lula in Curitiba, coordinating the travel schedule within the limited two visits allowed to Lula per week.

They reported problems related to the elections, including the barring of Lula's candidacy and an aggressive fake news campaign on social media. They expressed concern about the rise of a far-right government in Brazil, fundamentalist and censorious of environmental issues, repressive against democracy and ultraliberal in its economic policies, coupled with the erosion of workers' rights.

During the meeting held on Tuesday morning, discussions also covered the assassination of councilwoman Marielle Franco, which will mark 11 months in March, and the current president's family's ties to militias.

On Tuesday afternoon, PT parliamentarians have another meeting with representatives of the Belgian left and other countries. The agenda continues on Wednesday (20) with a meeting with the bloc of social democratic MEPs.
