Gleisi says that tax breaks on fuels should be maintained as long as the government does not change Petrobras' pricing policy.
The Finance Ministry opposes maintaining the tax exemption, and President Lula is evaluating whether to uphold the measure implemented by the Bolsonaro government.
247 - The national president of the PT party, congresswoman Gleisi Hoffmann (PR), argues that the tax exemption on fuels should be maintained as a way to contain prices until a new pricing policy is implemented by Petrobras.
The current pricing policy, established after the 2016 coup, dollarizes prices, making fuel more expensive for Brazilians. In this context, the suspension of federal taxes serves as a brake on inflation. However, the Treasury opposes maintaining the tax break, arguing that the costs to the federal government are not justified. President Lula is evaluating what measure to take.
Gleisi, in a Twitter thread, called for a new pricing policy, which could be defined starting in April. She argues that this new policy should be balanced, reducing prices for consumers while simultaneously encouraging investment in Petrobras.
"Taxes are not and never have been responsible for the explosion in gasoline prices that we have witnessed since the coup and during the Bolsonaro/Guedes government. We are not against taxing fuels, but doing so now is penalizing the consumer, generating more inflation, and breaking a campaign promise," wrote Gleisi.
