Gleisi denies Ciro Nogueira's claims about IOF and points out that the rate was higher under the Bolsonaro administration.
The minister refuted criticisms from the PP senator and stated that he is "spreading lies" about the decree issued by President Lula.
247 - The Minister of Institutional Relations, Gleisi Hoffmann (PT), reacted harshly to statements made by Senator Ciro Nogueira (PP-PI) this Wednesday (9), during an interview with GloboNews, in which the parliamentarian criticized the Lula government's decree on the Tax on Financial Operations (IOF). According to the minister, Ciro is lying when he says that the measure impacts the credit of low-income people.
“Ciro Nogueira, president of the PP party, went on TV today to spread lies about the IOF decree. The measure does not affect and has never affected credit for individuals, which has not been altered,” Gleisi stated in a social media post.
She also pointed out that the IOF tax rate on international transactions, set at 3,5% by the current government, was significantly higher during Jair Bolsonaro's (PL) administration, when Ciro held the position of Chief of Staff. "It should also be remembered that the IOF on international transactions, which the decree stipulates at 3,5%, was 6,38% during Bolsonaro's government," the minister wrote.
The post continued in a forceful tone: “Spreading lies like that on TV and social media is not opposing the government. It's working against the country, which marked the misgovernment in which Ciro Nogueira was minister. Lula's government is working for tax justice.”
The criticism came in response to the senator's statement, who said: "If the IOF (Tax on Financial Operations) is not waived for low-income people, financing for refrigerators, groceries, and the anticipation of revenue for small businesses, we will not accept it under any circumstances. If they want to charge IOF to those who spend abroad, that's fine, we can include that in the discussion. But low-income people can no longer be sacrificed in our country."
