247 - Former PT president José Genoino sent a request to the courts on Monday (9) for a pardon to be granted and his sentence in Criminal Action 470 to be considered extinguished. It will be up to the rapporteur of the action in the Supreme Federal Court, Minister Luís Roberto Barroso, to decide on the case.

The request was made based on the Christmas pardon signed by President Dilma Rousseff last December. This benefit is granted annually by the head of the Executive branch, who uses the instrument to extinguish the sentences of criminals convicted to short prison terms who have good behavior and are not repeat offenders.

In Genoino's case, the pardon benefits him because it allows for the extinction of sentences for those who are already in the open regime and have served more than a quarter of their sentence, a situation in which he finds himself.
