Almost 50 years after Vladimir Herzog's murder by the military dictatorship, the journalist's family will receive reparations from the Brazilian State. The agreement was signed by the AGU - the Attorney General's Office - this Thursday (26), the day before Vlado would have turned 88.

Compensation for moral damages is expected to be paid to the journalist's family, in addition to retroactive payments for the economic reparations paid to his widow, Clarice Herzog, obtained through a preliminary injunction granted by the Federal Court. Besides the total amount of R$ 3 million, monthly payments will continue.

In a press conference, Ivo Herzog, son of Vlado and Clarice, recalled that, at the time of his father's execution, the Attorney General's Office (AGU) turned a blind eye to the seriousness of the case. He emphasizes that this omission increased his mother's vulnerability.

According to the Attorney General of the Union, Jorge Messias, the reparation to Herzog's family also aims to restore society's trust in the State.

Journalist and professor Vladimir Herzog was killed on October 25, 1975, while serving as the news director of TV Cultura. The day before his execution, he was approached by military personnel at the station. He made himself available and appeared to testify the following day at the DOI-Codi/SP headquarters in Vila Mariana, where he was tortured and murdered. The military attempted to make it appear that the journalist's death was a suicide.
