Brazilian Army bans demonstrations at military barracks during Bolsonaro's trial.
Military forces restrict political acts in military areas while the Supreme Court begins analysis of attempted coup.
247 - The Brazilian Army has determined a ban on demonstrations in front of barracks during the trial of Jair Bolsonaro (PL), which begins this Tuesday (3). According to the newspaper The GlobeThe directive from the Force commander, General Tomás Paiva, aims to prevent military areas from becoming the scene of political acts during a time of institutional tension.
The measure aims to prevent the proceedings in the Supreme Federal Court (STF), which is analyzing the participation of Bolsonaro and other allies in an alleged coup plot, from affecting the routine of military units. According to O Globo, the same rule will also apply if the former president is convicted and eventually sent to serve his sentence in military facilities — in which case demonstrations and encampments will also be prohibited.
In addition to the Army's determination, the trial triggered a series of preventive actions in Brasília. The Public Security Secretariat of the Federal District (SSP-DF) set up a special scheme in the Praça dos Três Poderes (Three Powers Square), which will have increased police presence and the use of barriers to restrict access.
Secretary Sandro Avelar explained that there will be searches of people attempting to enter the area carrying backpacks, in addition to the use of drones for monitoring. "The Supreme Court has allowed people to watch the trial from inside. We have been warning that we will be searching people who go to the Praça dos Três Poderes (Three Powers Square)," he stated.
Meanwhile, according to the report, the Institutional Security Office (GSI) intensified surveillance at presidential buildings, installing barriers around the Planalto Palace, the Alvorada Palace, and the official residence of the vice-presidency, the Jaburu Palace.
Of the eight defendants who make up the so-called "crucial core" of the criminal case, six are military officers. Besides Jair Bolsonaro (PL), the list includes Lieutenant Colonel Mauro Cid, former aide-de-camp; retired generals Paulo Sérgio Nogueira, Braga Netto, and Augusto Heleno; and Admiral Almir Garnier. Former Justice Minister Anderson Torres and federal deputy Alexandre Ramagem will also be tried.
The Brazilian Supreme Court (STF) is analyzing accusations of attempted coup d'état, violent abolition of the democratic rule of law, participation in an armed criminal organization, aggravated damage to federal property, and deterioration of a listed heritage site.
