"The Brazilian people are the true excellence," says Lewandowski at an event organized by the MST.
Supreme Court Justice defends democracy and popular participation.
247 - The Landless Workers Movement received Minister Ricardo Lewandowski on Saturday (11) at the Florestan Fernandes National School (ENFF), located in Guararema, São Paulo, with the aim of reaffirming the defense of Democracy and Popular Participation in Brazil. For the Minister, these two pillars are fundamental to guaranteeing a strong State capable of meeting the needs and rights of workers, according to the website of MST.
Minister Lewandowski, grateful for the visit to ENFF, addressed the historical elements that constitute the construction of rights as a basis for democracy during his speech. However, before that, he questioned the use of the honorific title "Your Excellency" when referring to him:
"I want to start by saying that many have called me 'Your Excellency,' but I want to say that excellence is the Brazilian people. Visiting the MST School, I realized what an organized people is capable of. And the school is an example of that."
The lecture featured the participation of representatives, lawyers, and attorneys from movements, organizations, and political institutions that advocate for the construction of a popular project for the country. The Brazilian Association of Jurists for Democracy (ABJD), the São Paulo Lawyers Union, the National Council of Justice, and Transforma MP are examples of organizations that participated in the event.
Present at the table with Minister Lewandowski were: Carol Proner, from ABJD; João Pedro Stedile, from the National Coordination of the MST; and Lenio Luiz Streck, professor, PhD in law, and writer. The discussion was based on constructing a historical reading of Brazilian democracy and the struggles that defended workers' rights and political freedom as a tool that guarantees the free expression and participation of the people in the direction of the country.
Proner, Stedile, and Streck spoke about the importance of holding the event at a time when the restoration of rights is at the center of discussions, in the face of the dismantling caused by the Bolsonaro government and the intensification of social, political, and legal crises in the country.
Stedile emphasized that the people's participation in the reconstruction of Brazil will take place in the streets and through the strengthening of the Popular Committees. “To position ourselves in the class struggle, which will be difficult, popular participation is the solution. We believe that the Popular Committees are an important way to continue organizing the people and the activists, so that our activists can be the leaven of the dough. Lula and his victory opened the door, but we have a long road ahead that will only be resolved through popular struggle.”
Minister Lewandowski, grateful for the visit to ENFF, addressed the historical elements that constitute the construction of rights as a basis for democracy during his speech. However, before that, he questioned the use of the honorific title "Your Excellency" when referring to him:
I want to start by saying that many have called me "Your Excellency," but I want to say that excellence is the Brazilian people. Visiting the MST school, I realized what an organized people is capable of. And the school is an example of that.”
At first, he spoke of the need to consider common struggles based on common ideas. "Everything changes, everything transforms, but we need to have a guiding principle, values, principles, and a worldview, or an ideology. What unites us is a common worldview. A vision in which the people are masters of their own destiny, with the goal of building a more just, egalitarian, and fraternal society."
He pointed out that over the past four years, during the Bolsonaro administration, any participation of the people in governance and the political process has ceased. “When we say that democracy is in crisis […], I am saying that the idea of democracy, of the people participating in public affairs, is a living ideal that needs to be built by all of us.”
In this sense, for democracy to be effective, the minister points out that it "involves discussions that go beyond forms of government and electoral processes; being a democrat means being a fighter for the participation of the people," Lewandowski stated.
