Erundina: General Peternelli at Funai is a risk to indigenous peoples.
Congresswoman Luiza Erundina (PSOL-SP) criticized the nomination of General Roberto Sebastião Peternelli Júnior to head FUNAI in Michel Temer's interim government; "A retired general who advocates for the return of the military to power taking command of FUNAI is an affront," she stated; "It is a concrete risk of the suspension of human rights in relation to indigenous people, or even of a militarization with genocidal potential," she added.
247 - Federal deputy Luiza Erundina (PSOL-SP) criticized on Wednesday, the 6th, the nomination of General Roberto Sebastião Peternelli Júnior to head the National Indian Foundation (Funai) in Michel Temer's interim government.
"A retired general who advocates for the return of the military to power taking command of FUNAI is an affront. Peternelli is linked, contrary to what is expected of someone in charge of FUNAI, to the rural caucus in the Chamber of Deputies," criticized Erundina.
The congresswoman criticized the Chamber for adopting measures contrary to a fair demarcation of indigenous lands, through Constitutional Amendment Proposal 215, which transfers the prerogative of demarcation from the Executive to the Legislative branch.
"Peternelli represents a concrete risk of the suspension of human rights in relation to indigenous people, or even of a militarization with genocidal potential," he added.
