247 – The Ministry of Education is trying to do its homework in this edition of the National High School Exam (Enem). In order to advance the political aspirations of Minister Fernando Haddad, a potential candidate for mayor of São Paulo, the model of access to higher education conceived by him – via Enem – needs to work. Employees of the National Institute of Educational Studies and Research Anísio Teixeira (Inep), the MEC's arm in organizing the tests, worked hard to avoid problems from recent editions, such as poor supervision. On this first day of Enem, the increased rigor in the supervision of the exams was already clear. Eight candidates were disqualified for being caught tweeting during the exam.

The incidents were recorded in five states: Pará, São Paulo, Maranhão, Rio Grande do Sul, and Paraná. The organization disqualified the young people from the competition because they were using electronic devices to access social media. The use of these devices is prohibited, according to the ENEM (National High School Exam) rules. In addition to these cases, the Ministry of Education reports that there were "only incidents" in Bahia, São Paulo, and Rio de Janeiro, where long lines at the test locations caused anxiety among the candidates.

O @brasil247 She asked her followers how the organization of the ENEM exam went this Saturday, and the response was positive. Luisa Lemdobro's son (@Luisa_Lemdobro) participated in the process in Itajaí (SC). "Questions as expected, no difficulties, gates closed on time without incidents," she tweeted. "What a tiring exam," complained Estefany Lopes (@estefanylopes), acknowledging that there were no organizational problems where she took the exam, in Rio de Janeiro.

Abstention

The absenteeism rate on the first day of exams was 25,29%. Of the 5,3 million registered, just over four million took the exams. The Federal District (31%) and Bahia (30,1%) were the states with the highest number of absent candidates.

According to Inep, the weather conditions in Bahia were responsible for the number of absences. Rain is frequent at this time of year. In the Federal District, the low temperature – 17 degrees, unusual for this season – may have discouraged candidates from leaving home.

Questions

The test questions piqued the candidates' curiosity. There were so many different topics that the hashtag #AprendiNoEnem (I Learned at the ENEM exam) went viral on Twitter and became a Trending Topic. Among the eccentric themes was the functioning of a toilet. "It was a Physics question," explained Rodrigo Brito, from Sabará (MG). "And never trust a female firefly... Believe me," he said, referring to another item.

Second day

Inep asks candidates to arrive one hour before the start of the exam at the test site. This avoids problems like the one at Paulista University (Unip) in São Paulo, on the Lapa campus in the western part of the capital. There, about one hundred students were late because of a traffic accident. Angry at the closing of the gates, they kicked down the building's door. The police had to be called.

This Sunday, the more than five million candidates will take the language, codes, and technology exams. The gates always open at 12 PM – Brasília time.
