Sputnik Brazil - The relationship between the president and vice president has been strained for some time, however, Bolsonaro is still "leaving it up in the air" who his ally will be in next year's presidential race, and has even mentioned Mourão as a possible option.

According to Lauro Jardim's blog in O Globo, Bolsonaro and Mourão met for private conversations in the presidential office only twice throughout 2021. Other meetings took place in the presence of ministers, during ministerial meetings.

The relationship between the two has been strained for some time. On one hand, the president thinks the vice president "talks too much," while on the other, Mourão, feeling out of place at public events, ends up giving statements to the press without first discussing the agenda with the president.

However, this relationship is a love-hate one. In late November, in behind-the-scenes conversations, Bolsonaro reportedly told Mourão that it was time to "prepare the parachute," since he doesn't count on his vice president for his reelection project, as reported.

Back in mid-December, when answering a supporter's question about who he would run against for president, the president replied, "It could even be Mourão."

According to media reports, even if the general is not the president's choice, Bolsonaro has been advised by his political allies, including the president of the PL party, Valdemar Costa Neto, to once again choose a military figure for next year's election.

Therefore, the head of the Executive branch would be certain to secure a share of the vote among the Army, Navy, Air Force, federal police, and military personnel.
