Eduardo Bolsonaro intensifies contact with the Trump administration regarding the imposition of sanctions against Alexandre de Moraes.
Bolsonaro's son meets with State Department officials and tries to involve Trump in Brazil's internal affairs.
247 - Brazilian congressman Eduardo Bolsonaro (PL-SP) held another round of meetings this week with officials from the U.S. State Department in Washington, according to journalist [name missing]. Monica Bergamo In his column in Folha de S.Paulo, he stated that the meetings are part of a rapprochement with the government of US President Donald Trump, who recently announced the imposition of 50% tariffs on Brazilian products, a measure that, according to him, is partially linked to "ending the persecution" of former President Jair Bolsonaro and his allies.
Accompanied by journalist and economist Paulo Figueiredo, Eduardo Bolsonaro sought to reinforce the request for the United States to adopt sanctions against the Minister of the Supreme Federal Court (STF), Alexandre de Moraes, based on the Magnitsky Act — US legislation that allows penalties against foreigners accused of corruption or human rights violations.
According to Figueiredo, the two were summoned to the State Department to discuss the “next steps” following the announcement of the tariffs. “The Americans spoke about what they expect from Brazil after Trump’s announcement and that the country has to ‘take the first step’ to de-escalate the crisis,” he reported. “But they are seeing that Brazil is acting in the opposite direction and doubling down.”
During one of the conversations, one of the American authorities reportedly requested a phone call with Jair Bolsonaro. According to Eduardo, the former president answered the call for a few minutes. "It was to give him a hug," he stated.
The meetings focused on Jair Bolsonaro's trial, scheduled for August, in which the former president could be sentenced to more than 40 years in prison. For Eduardo, avoiding conviction requires an internal political movement: "This will only happen with the approval of a broad amnesty by the National Congress."
Paulo Figueiredo also reported that there was interest from US authorities regarding the members of the Supreme Federal Court. "They also asked about each of the Supreme Court justices, wanting to know in detail how each of them operates," he said.
Alongside the son of the former president, Figueiredo has played an active role in negotiations with the Trump administration, in an attempt to increase diplomatic pressure on Brazil. The insistence on involving the US government in Brazil's internal affairs paves the way for greater imperialist interference against national sovereignty.
Meanwhile, the Brazilian government is still evaluating a formal response to the imposition of the new tariffs. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is studying the application of reciprocal measures and seeking support from other affected countries.
Eduardo Bolsonaro's actions are part of a broader strategy by Bolsonaro's supporters to internationalize their narrative of political persecution and pressure the Brazilian judiciary. The coming weeks are expected to be decisive, with new developments anticipated both domestically and internationally.
