Newspapers in Brazil - The documentary by French journalists Frédérique Zingaro and Mathilde Bonnassieux called “Brésil – Le Grand Bond en Arrière"(Brazil - The Great Step Backwards, free translation) portrays the consequences of Dilma Rousseff's impeachment for Brazilian society and the takeover of power by a political class dedicated to its own interests and conservative leanings."
The film was shown on Saturday (30), as part of the Biarritz Latin America Festival 2017 program.
The book describes the political chaos that engulfed Brazil with the beginning of the impeachment process against the Workers' Party leader, starting by portraying the emblematic vote in the Chamber of Deputies on April 17, 2016, to impeach Dilma Rousseff. It includes the shocking images of deputies shouting insults at the president and voting "for their families, their wives, and for God – never in the name of the people or the country," which went around the world, "just a year and a half after her election, despite the 54 million people who trusted her [Dilma Rousseff] for a second term," the author argues.
The film presents a Brazil in tatters, polarized, demoralized, exhausted, and observes how the removal of a "democratically elected" president can be accomplished so quickly and easily.
Journalists Zingaro and Bonnassieux portray a justice system obsessed with persecuting politicians from the Workers' Party and, especially, former president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, "despite corruption extending to all parties," the documentary points out.
