247 - Democrats allied with President Lula's government and the far-right opposition will engage in a "street battle" in the coming weeks over a bill in the National Congress that would grant amnesty to those involved in the coup attempts of January 8th.

After an opposition demonstration in Rio de Janeiro, which failed and fell far short of the expected 1 million participants, the Democrats, led by the left, are planning a rally on Paulista Avenue in São Paulo on March 30th.

"No amnesty. Bolsonaro in jail. The time is now. We will take to the streets," wrote federal deputy Guilherme Boulos (PSOL-SP) on his social media.

The MTST (Homeless Workers' Movement) also called on popular forces to protest against the amnesty. "For those who oppose the legalization of the coup d'état, disguised as 'amnesty,' let's hold a nationwide protest on March 30th. For holding the coup plotters accountable, dictatorship never again!", the MTST wrote on social media.

On the other hand, Bolsonaro supporters are preparing a pro-amnesty rally for April 6th, also on Paulista Avenue, with evangelical pastor Silas Malafaia among the main leaders calling for the mobilization. "We will continue to shout for the freedom of innocent people," he said in a video widely circulated on social media.
