Deputy Alencar Santana demands of Tarcísio: 'Zero the ICMS tax on basic food items in the state of São Paulo'
Santana accuses governor of lying about state tax exemption; federal government eliminated import taxes to curb inflation.
247 - Federal Deputy Alencar Santana (PT-SP) harshly criticized the governor of São Paulo, Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicanos), regarding the exemption of the Tax on Circulation of Goods and Services (ICMS) for basic food items in the state. In a video released on his social media, the congressman accused the governor of "continuing to lie" about the matter, demanding effective action from the state government to guarantee the reduction of the tax on essential foods.
"Stop lying, Governor. This is people's daily lives, it's about their food. What does it matter if it's party A or party B?" Santana stated in the video.
The deputy also highlighted the recent measures adopted by the federal government to contain the rise in food prices. Last Thursday (6), the government decided to eliminate the Import Tax on nine types of essential foods. Among the products benefited are olive oil, corn, sunflower oil, sardines, biscuits, pasta, coffee, meat and sugar.
The congressman stressed that it is now up to Governor Tarcísio de Freitas to follow the federal example and guarantee the exemption of ICMS (a state sales tax) on basic food products. The aim of the action is to reduce the high prices of basic foodstuffs for the population, which is facing difficulties due to inflation in the sector. "Why can't state governments eliminate the ICMS? They just have to want to. Tarcísio, eliminate the ICMS on basic food products in the state of São Paulo," he demanded.
Santana's demand reflects a growing concern about the economic situation in the country's richest state, where the cost of food continues to strain family budgets.
