247 - The Federal Senate elected Davi Alcolumbre (União-AP) as president of the House for the next two years this Saturday (1st). This will be the parliamentarian's second term in the position, which he already held between 2019 and 2021. The election marked a moment of strong political articulation, guaranteeing Alcolumbre support from both the government base and the opposition. He obtained 73 votes out of 81 in his favor.

Known for his behind-the-scenes work and his ability to build consensus, Alcolumbre maintained influence in the House even during Rodrigo Pacheco's (PSD-MG) administration, eventually leading the Constitution and Justice Committee (CCJ), considered the most important in the Senate. His election reflects a strategy of balancing political forces, bringing together support from parties that, outside of this context, are usually on opposite sides of the political spectrum.

The composition of the new Board of Directors highlights this arrangement: the PL, the main opposition party to the federal government, will hold the first vice-presidency, occupied by Eduardo Gomes (PL-TO), while the PT, President Lula's party, nominated Humberto Costa (PT-PE) for the second vice-presidency.

Despite widespread support, some political parties opposed or chose not to get involved in the race. Novo and PSDB were the only parties that did not back his candidacy, while Podemos left its senators free to vote as they wished.

Colleagues say that much of his strength lies in meeting the internal demands of the Senate.

In his election speech this Saturday, he made that very clear:

"There will be no strong democracy without a free Congress, without a firm Parliament, without a sovereign, autonomous, and independent Senate," he stated.

Alcolumbre also signaled that he will fight for the release of parliamentary amendments, suspended by Minister Flávio Dino of the Supreme Federal Court (STF), who pointed to a lack of transparency in the process. The government had agreed to release the funds in an agreement with parliament.
