Brazil Agency - The press office of singer Gilberto Gil informed this Monday afternoon (21) that the body of his daughter Preta Gil will be laid to rest in the city of Rio de Janeiro. A victim of cancer, Preta died on Sunday (20) at the age of 50, in New York, in the United States, after a worsening of her health condition. She was in the country to undergo experimental treatment to combat the disease, which was diagnosed in 2023.
The family said there is no estimated time for her body to return to Brazil. "She will be laid to rest in Rio de Janeiro, where her family, friends, and the public will be able to pay their respects."
On their farewell tour, Gil and Preta sang the song "Drão" together for the last time at a show in São Paulo in April.
Colorectal cancer
The singer and businesswoman was diagnosed with bowel cancer in 2023 and went into remission after surgery and treatment. However, in 2024, the disease returned in other areas of her body, requiring a new round of surgeries and medications, as well as experimental treatment in the US. Preta Gil is the daughter of singer Gilberto Gil and Sandra Gadelha, and is survived by her son Francisco Gil and granddaughter Sol de Maria.
As a performer, she recorded four studio albums, two live CDs and DVDs. One of the highlights of her career was the creation of Bloco da Preta, a street carnival group in Rio de Janeiro, which at one point gathered around 500 people. She was also a partner in Mynd, one of the leading digital marketing agencies in Brazil.
