In protest against Bolsonaro, indigenous people take to the streets and demand that Funai (National Indian Foundation) be placed under the Ministry of Justice.
"The guarantee of territory is the main banner of indigenous peoples. Bringing the demarcation to the Ministry of Agriculture is a clear demonstration by the government that it will no longer carry out demarcations, because it is in the hands of agribusiness," stated Sônia Guajajara.
247 - In protest against Jair Bolsonaro's regressive measures, the indigenous community held events this Thursday (31) in various national and international locations. In Brazil, the events took place in 22 states and the Federal District, where dozens of protesters occupied the front of the Ministry of Agriculture.
The act is part of the national mobilization "Indigenous Blood, Not a Drop More," called for by the Articulation of Indigenous Peoples of Brazil (APIB).
Sônia Guajajara, coordinator of the association, criticized Provisional Measure 870, which transferred the demarcation of indigenous lands, previously under the responsibility of FUNAI (National Indian Foundation), to the Ministry of Agriculture. She argued that the agency should be relocated to the Ministry of Justice.
"The guarantee of territory is the main banner of indigenous peoples. Bringing the demarcation to the Ministry of Agriculture is a clear demonstration by the government that it will no longer carry out demarcations, because it is in the hands of agribusiness," emphasized the indigenous leader, according to Correio Braziliense.
According to her, the statements made by Bolsonaro on indigenous issues have helped fuel violence, conflict, and the invasion of indigenous lands. "Those who are already there and intend to invade feel supported by this discourse," she said.
The indigenous leader also refuted Bolsonaro's statement, in which he claimed that the indigenous person "wants to take a bath with soap, which they don't have."
"He's the one who needs to shower with soap; he's the one who's dirty, not us. What we want is a demarcated territory so we can have the right to full citizenship, being who we are, preserving our identity," he declared.
