247 - In 2023, Brazil recorded the lowest levels of poverty and extreme poverty in the historical series that began in 2012. According to the 2024 Social Indicators Synthesis (SIS), released by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), 8,7 million Brazilians escaped poverty in one year. The population with per capita income below R$ 665 per month (a value adopted by the World Bank) decreased from 67,7 million to 59 million, the lowest number in the last ten years. Proportionally, the number fell from 31,6% to 27,4% of the population.
Extreme poverty also reached its lowest historical level, falling to 4,4%. The number of people with per capita household income below R$ 209 per month dropped to 9,5 million. This figure represents a decrease from 5,9% to 4,4%, the lowest percentage recorded since 2012. Before that, 12,6 million Brazilians lived in this condition.
Data from SIS indicates that, without programs like Bolsa Família, the proportion of people in extreme poverty would be 11,2%. The poverty rate would increase from 27,4% to 32,4%.
The new Bolsa Família model, recreated in March 2023, guarantees a minimum value of R$ 600 per family. In addition to this amount, each child aged 0 to 6 receives an extra R$ 150. For children and adolescents aged 7 to 18 (not yet 18), the extra benefit is R$ 50, the same amount allocated to pregnant women and nursing mothers. The calculation of the household payment also includes an additional R$ 142 per person.
