Current Brazil Network - The invitation to elected federal deputy Luiz Marinho (PT-SP) to occupy the Ministry of Labor and Employment in the new government of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) has the support of the trade union centers. This Friday (16), a public letter was signed and released by CUT, Força Sindical, União Geral dos Trabalhadores, Central dos Sindicatos Brasileiros, Intersindical Central da Classe Trabalhadora, Nova Central Sindical de Trabalhadores, Central dos Sindicatos Brasileiros and Pública Central do Servidor.

In the document, the organizations welcome the re-establishment of the Ministry of Labor and Employment (MTE) by the president-elect – a proposal that is part of the 2022 workers' agenda. "We consider it essential to strengthen the MTE to articulate and materialize, with other ministries and civil society organizations, the concept that gives centrality to work and employment in the country's economic and social development strategies," the document states.

The labor unions emphasize that building a social, labor, and pension protection system for the entire working class is a challenge that must be faced with determination. "All these tasks are essential for the future Ministry of Labor and Employment, which must be proactive in confronting and overcoming the serious crisis the country is going through and the dismantling of the Brazilian state and its public policies."

And they are suggesting Luiz Marinho's name precisely because of this agenda and these challenges. "Luiz Marinho is fully aligned with the Brazilian labor movement and maintains broad dialogue with the business sector, possessing great skill in handling conflicts and a high capacity for conducting complex negotiations."

Marinho is the right person, according to union leaders.

According to the officials, "Marinho has built an exemplary public life and a highly qualified management career as Mayor of São Bernardo do Campo and Minister of Labor and, later, of Social Security. He is the right person to give the Ministry of Labor the leading role that is expected of it."

People close to Lula confirmed the invitation made days ago. The nomination reportedly also went through members of the transition team and has the support of the labor unions, which have three representatives on the Labor group. Transition OfficeHaving accepted the invitation, he will once again be part of Lula's cabinet during his third term.

Luiz Marinho, the state president of the PT (Workers' Party), was Lula's Minister of Labor from 2005 to 2008. First at the Ministry of Labor, then at Social Security. He left the government to be elected mayor of São Bernardo for two terms (2009-2016). Before that, he presided over the ABC Metalworkers' Union and the CUT (Unified Workers' Central). In this year's election, he received 156 votes for federal deputy. If his appointment is confirmed, his seat in the Chamber will be filled by the first alternate from the PT-PCdoB-PV federation, Orlando Silva (PCdoB).

Under Jair Bolsonaro's (PL) government, Labor and Social Security began as departments subordinate to the Ministry of Economy. During his administration, they were separated.

The undersigned labor unions welcome the re-establishment of the Ministry of Labor and Employment (MTE) by President-elect Luís Inácio Lula da Silva, a proposal included in the 2022 Workers' Agenda.

We consider it essential to strengthen the Ministry of Labor and Employment (MTE) to articulate and materialize, with other ministries and civil society organizations, the concept that gives centrality to work and employment in the country's economic and social development strategies.

Development geared towards sustainable socio-environmental production, which generates quality employment and wage growth, and which confronts and overcomes misery, poverty, and inequality, requires a strong and active Ministry of Labor and Employment.

Valuing collective bargaining as the main instrument for regulating labor relations and working conditions, carried out by strong and representative trade unions with organizational autonomy and financial support, affirms principles advocated by the ILO. To achieve this, it is urgent to correct the regulatory frameworks that legalize precarious work, devalue and discourage collective bargaining, weaken trade unions, and subject workers to employer coercion.

Building a social, labor, and pension protection system for the entire working class is a challenge that must be faced with determination. These are all essential tasks for the future Ministry of Labor and Employment (MTE), which must be proactive in confronting and overcoming the serious crisis the country is going through and the dismantling of the Brazilian state and its public policies.

Given this proposed agenda and the challenges outlined, the Trade Union Federations nominate Luiz Marinho for the position of Minister of Labor and Employment. Luiz Marinho is fully aligned with the Brazilian trade union movement and maintains broad dialogue with the business sector, possessing great skill in handling conflicts and a high capacity for conducting complex negotiations.

Marinho has built an exemplary career in public life and highly qualified management as Mayor of São Bernardo do Campo and Minister of Labor and, later, of Social Security. He is the right person to give the Ministry of Labor the leading role it deserves.
