Covid-19 cases increase by 1.300% in just seven days in Brazilian prisons.

According to data from Depen, linked to the Ministry of Justice, the number of inmates infected with the new coronavirus jumped from three to 42 in seven days. Earlier in the week, Minister Sergio Moro stated that the situation was under control.

247 - The number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the Brazilian prison system registered an increase of 1.300% in just one week. According to data from the National Penitentiary Department (Depen), linked to the Ministry of Justice and Public Security, the number of inmates infected by the new coronavirus jumped from three to 42 in seven days. 

According to a report by UOLAlthough no deaths related to COVID-19 have been officially recorded, several deaths due to respiratory problems are not being investigated by the authorities.

The most serious situation is located in the Federal District, where 38 prisoners at the Papuda Penitentiary Complex tested positive for the disease and 25 prison officers are infected. Another 38 cases are considered suspected. Cases have also been confirmed in prisons in Pernambuco (2), Ceará (1) and Pará (1).

Last Monday (13). The Minister of Justice, Sergio Moro, stated that the situation was under control. "We are taking the necessary precautions to identify and ensure that cases are properly isolated," he said at the time.
