The Minister of Justice and Public Security met with legal authorities from the state of Rio de Janeiro to discuss the murder committed by organized crime.
247 - The Minister of Justice and Public Security, Flávio Dino, once again reinforced that he will work to help conclude the investigations into the assassination of former city councilwoman Marielle Franco (PSOL) in Rio de Janeiro, who was killed by organized crime in 2018. The Minister of Justice met this Wednesday (15) with the Attorney General of Justice of Rio de Janeiro, Luciano Mattos, and the Deputy Attorney General, Marfan Martins Vieira, to discuss how to deepen the investigations into the homicide. "We will work in partnership, Ministry of Justice, Federal Police and Public Prosecutor's Office of Rio de Janeiro, aiming at the progress and conclusion of the investigations," said the minister.
According to the Attorney General, Luciano Mattos, "the idea is to strengthen the existing task force of the Rio de Janeiro Public Prosecutor's Office (MPRJ) dedicated exclusively to investigating the involvement of those who ordered the crime, so that the Federal Police, which is already following the case, can assist us more directly in the investigation, together with the Rio de Janeiro Civil Police."

Upon taking office as Minister of Justice, Flávio Dino pledged that the Federal Police would investigate the assassination of councilwoman Marielle Franco.
"I told Minister Anielle and her mother that it is a matter of honor for the Brazilian State to undertake all possible and appropriate efforts, and the Federal Police will act accordingly, so that this crime is definitively solved and we know who killed Marielle and who ordered the killing of Marielle Franco that day in Rio de Janeiro," the minister stated at the time, referring to the head of the Ministry of Racial Equality.

Councilwoman Marielle Franco was assassinated in March 2018 by organized crime. The criminals fired the shots in a location without cameras in the central region of Rio de Janeiro and, before the crime, had pursued the car she was in for about three or four kilometers. Marielle was a human rights activist who denounced police violence in the favelas and also criticized the actions of militias.

Two police officers were arrested: Ronnie Lessa, who, according to the investigation, fired the shots, and Élcio Vieira de Queiroz, 46, who was driving the car at the time of the crime. Lessa lived in the same condominium as Jair Bolsonaro (PL) in Rio de Janeiro, and Queiroz also arrived there. to appear in a photo with Jair Bolsonaro, whose face was cropped out of the image.
