Campos Neto will be summoned to the Chamber to explain abusive interest rates, says Boulos.
"It is unacceptable that these exorbitant interest rates are maintained in Brazil," the congressman stated.
247 - Federal deputy Guilherme Boulos (PSOL-SP) announced that he will present a request in the Chamber of Deputies to summon the president of the Central Bank, Roberto Campos Neto, after the decision to maintain the basic interest rate at 13,75%.
"Absurd! We're going to summon Campos Neto to the Finance and Taxation Committee of the Chamber of Deputies to explain himself! It's unacceptable that these exorbitant interest rates are being maintained in Brazil," Boulos said on Twitter.
>>> Campos Neto's statement challenges Lula and does not rule out another interest rate hike.
This was the fifth consecutive rate change, at the highest level in the last six years. When the Selic rate reached 13,75% in August of last year, the official inflation rate (IPCA-IBGE) was 8,73% over 12 months. According to the latest data, referring to January, it is at 5,60%. Thus, with the current basic rate, the real interest rate (above inflation) is above 8%.
The next meeting of the Monetary Policy Committee (Copom) will be on May 2nd and 3rd. (*With RBA)
