Brazil mobilizes for Bolsonaro's arrest and against amnesty for coup plotters. See the locations with protests scheduled for the weekend.
The former president and seven allies became defendants after a unanimous decision by the five justices of the Supreme Court's First Panel.
Brazil of Fact - Next Sunday (30), the Popular Brazil and People Without Fear fronts will hold demonstrations across the country against the amnesty for those arrested on January 8 and the arrest of former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL).
“With the development of this week’s trial, of the core group behind the attempted coup of January 8th and Bolsonaro in the dock, we hope that this agenda will gain even more momentum and that we can advance both in the ideological dispute in society and in putting pressure on the judiciary so that justice is done,” says Daiane Araújo, vice-president of the National Union of Students (UNE), which is part of the fronts.
On Wednesday (26), the former president and seven allies became defendants for attempted coup d'état and abolition of the democratic rule of law by unanimous decision of the five ministers of the First Panel of the Supreme Federal Court (STF).
With the complaint from the Attorney General's Office (PGR) accepted, a criminal case will be opened, with the collection of testimonies and other evidence. Subsequently, a trial will decide whether the former president should be convicted or acquitted.
In total, the crimes Bolsonaro is accused of could add up to 43 years in prison: aggravated damage with the use of violence and serious threats (6 months to 3 years), deterioration of listed property (1 to 3 years), attempt to abolish the Democratic Rule of Law (4 to 8 years), attempted coup d'état (4 to 12 years), and criminal organization (3 to 8 years, which can reach 17 years depending on aggravating circumstances).
