Brazil reports 15 deaths from methanol poisoning.

São Paulo accounts for nine fatalities, while other states are still investigating possible deaths related to the consumption of adulterated beverages.

247 - The Ministry of Health announced this Friday (24) that the number of deaths from methanol poisoning has reached 15 across Brazil. The information was published by UOL.

In total, nine deaths occurred in São Paulo, three in Paraná, and three in Pernambuco. Other deaths are under investigation for suspected poisoning, including four in Pernambuco, two in Paraná, one in Minas Gerais, one in Mato Grosso do Sul, and one in São Paulo.

In São Paulo, the most recent case is that of Rafael Anjos Martins, 28, who died on Thursday (23) after more than 50 days in hospital. He consumed gin contaminated with methanol, bought at a liquor store located in the Cidade Dutra neighborhood, south of the capital.

Methanol is a toxic substance commonly used in the chemical industry and in fuels. When ingested, it can cause nausea, vomiting, headaches, blurred vision, permanent blindness, seizures, coma, and death.
