Brazil did not bow its head to Trump because it had character and dignity, says Lula
The President defended national sovereignty and recalled that the country's true power lies in guaranteeing housing and food for the people.
247 - President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) made a direct reference to US President Donald Trump this Monday (20), during the Launch of the Casa Brasil Renovation program in Brasília. When discussing the topic of national sovereignty, Lula stated that Brazil did not bow to the measures adopted by Trump when the United States government imposed tariffs on Brazilian products.
“When President Trump imposed tariffs on Brazil and showed offense, we didn’t lower our heads because, although we are not as big as they are, we have character that they often don’t know we have. We have dignity,” said Lula. “That’s what makes a country a nation, which means national sovereignty. A country where the people don’t have homes, education, and food is not sovereign. It can’t even be called a country.”
"For us to talk about a real country, to talk about democracy, this has to be reflected in people's faces, in the clothes they wear, in the food they eat, in the quality of education they receive, in the quality of the shoes they wear. You know, that's what gives a country its sense of sovereignty," the president added.
The speech was delivered at the Palácio do Planalto during the launch of the Reforma Casa Brasil program, an initiative that offers facilitated credit for home renovations and improvements throughout the country.
