247, with Sputnik Agency - The Brazilian government determined this Thursday (19) the closure of borders with South American countries as a measure to contain the spread of the coronavirus. According to the decree, the measure is temporary, but no deadlines were specified. The deadline may be extended if there is a technical and substantiated recommendation from the National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa) to that effect.

The entry restriction applies to the following countries: Argentina, Bolivia, Colombia, Guyana, French Guiana, Paraguay, and Peru. The government will issue a specific decree regarding the borders with Uruguay, which were excluded from the announced restrictions.

According to the Ministry of Justice, the border closures apply to physical, land borders and do not affect those traveling from other countries by plane.

The decision does not apply to Brazilian citizens who are in these locations and wish to enter Brazil. Furthermore, cargo and humanitarian aid workers will be allowed to continue entering the country.

The measure was determined in an order signed by the Ministers of Health, Luiz Henrique Mandetta, Justice, Sérgio Moro, and the Chief of Staff, Braga Netto.
