Bolsonaro mocks poverty and unemployment: 'The poor have been accustomed to not having a profession'

247 - Jair Bolsonaro (PL) once again downplayed the problem of hunger in Brazil, where 33 million people suffer from food insecurity., and stated that the poor population is "used to" not having a profession. "Getting people out of poverty is a gigantic task. These are people who, over the years, have become accustomed to not worrying or the State denying them a way to learn a profession," said the occupant of the Planalto Palace in an interview with the Catholic broadcaster Rede Vida on Wednesday (21), according to Metropolis

He also downplayed the problem of hunger in Brazil, saying that the data is overestimated. "It's not that many," he stated. Data from the 2nd National Survey on Food Insecurity in the Context of the Covid-19 Pandemic in Brazil, Studies conducted by the Brazilian Network for Research on Food and Nutritional Sovereignty and Security (Rede Penssan) indicate that 33 million people suffer from hunger in Brazil. According to Bolsonaro, people living below the poverty line can apply for the Brazil Aid program.

Also on Wednesday, the Economy Minister, Paulo GuedesHe tried to discredit the study, claiming the data was a "lie." "33 million people going hungry is a lie. We are transferring 1,5% of GDP to the poorest, with the Brazil Aid program, three times more than they received before," said Guedes. 

In the interview, Bolsonaro also said that if re-elected, he will appoint two new judges to the Supreme Federal Court (STF) who are opposed to abortion in Brazil. He further stated that the Court acts in a "completely independent" manner from the other branches of government and possesses a "very strong activism."

"The Judiciary presents itself as a completely independent power, in this case the Supreme Federal Court. They have a very strong activism. The latest example is interfering with the decrees [that relaxed access to firearms]. Our Constitution states that it is the exclusive prerogative of the Legislative branch to question decrees, via a draft legislative decree," he stated.
