Bolsonaro included official events in his motorcycle ride itinerary to justify expenses on his corporate credit card.
Bolsonaro included official engagements at churches and military ceremonies to pay for his own security with public funds during outings with supporters.
247 - Jair Bolsonaro (PL) had a strategy to try to justify paying for the costs of his motorcycle rallies with the Presidential corporate credit card, explains Vicente Nunes, from Mail Braziliense.
He included official engagements at evangelical churches and military ceremonies in his motorcycle ride itinerary. This allowed him to "divert funds to finance the entire security structure for these rides with supporters."
Each of Bolsonaro's events required around 40 security guards. Therefore, if there were four events on the same day, 160 agents would be needed. And they were never the same guards.
"This had an extremely high cost, since each soldier is entitled to four simple meals. Thus, if there were four events in one day and 160 security personnel, 640 meals would be needed. This also applied to the motorcycle parades, even though it was a private event, not an event of the Presidency of the Republic. The expenses were increased by transportation and overnight stays in hotels. In total, Bolsonaro spent more than R$ 27 million on corporate credit cards in four years, of which R$ 13,6 million was for lodging. The cards managed by the GSI remain confidential," the report says.
There were also the expenses related to the Bolsonaro family. Carlos Bolsonaro, for example, even though he was a city councilman in Rio de Janeiro, spent more days in Brasília than in the state capital. According to the article, he "frequently 'escaped' to Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina, and Goiás. Since December 2020, expenses related to Bolsonaro's family members have been covered by GSI corporate credit cards."
