247 Jair Bolsonaro thanked Russian President Vladimir Putin for saying that the Amazon is a Brazilian heritage, not a human heritage. As Bolsonaro stated in a press conference in Moscow, alongside Putin, other presidents do not share this view.
"When some countries questioned the Amazon as a world heritage site, I want to thank you for your intervention, which has always been on our side in defense of our sovereignty. Thank you very much, Putin, for the welcome," said Bolsonaro.
Bolsonaro's statement refers to a clash that occurred in August 2019 between him and the French president, Emmanuel Macron. Faced with the increasing number of fires in the Amazon, Macron described the fires as a... "international crisis" and requested that the G7 countries discuss the issue.
Bolsonaro then accused his French counterpart of "instrumentalizing an internal issue" of Brazil for "political gain," making use of an "unacceptable colonialist mentality."
In November of that year, Brazil managed to include in the final text of the declaration of the 11th BRICS Summit – a group formed by Brazil, Russia, China and South Africa – that international cooperation on forests "must respect national sovereignty".
Bolsonaro landed in Russia on Tuesday (15) amid tensions between the European country and Ukraine. Putin had ordered the movement of troops in border regions with Ukraine.
