Bolsonaro disavows Mourão's right to comment on Ukraine: 'it's not within his competence'
'As far as possible, we want peace,' says Bolsonaro regarding Russia's military operation.
Capital Letter - President Jair Bolsonaro on Thursday, the 24th, overruled Vice President Hamilton Mourão from speaking on behalf of the government about the crisis between Russia and Ukraine. He also stated that, "as far as possible, we want peace."
This morning, Mourão told journalists that "Brazil is not neutral" and "does not agree with an invasion of Ukrainian territory." That evening, in a live broadcast on social media, Bolsonaro read a news article about Mourão's statement and then criticized the Army general.
"Article 84 of the Constitution states that the president is the one who speaks on this matter. And the president's name is Jair Messias Bolsonaro. Period. With all due respect to the person who said that, they are saying something they shouldn't, it's not within their competence," Bolsonaro stated.
