Barroso thanks Dilma and Lula for the 'republican' appointment and for 'defending the Supreme Court'.
The judge highlighted Dilma's personality and defended Lula's actions when the Court was under attack.
247 - Supreme Court Justice Luís Roberto Barroso expressed his gratitude this Thursday (9) to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and to the president of the NDB, Dilma Rousseff, who nominated the magistrate to the STF in 2013, when she was President of the Republic.
“I am grateful to President Dilma Rousseff, who appointed me to the position in the most republican way possible, without asking, without insinuating, without demanding,” said Barroso at the Supreme Court in Brasília (DF). “I am grateful to President Lula for his firm defense of the court when it was under attack,” he added.
The judge did not mention Bolsonaro's supporters, but his speech thanking Lula made reference to the attacks launched by Bolsonaro supporters against the Supreme Court. Barroso, 67, presided over the Court between September 2023 and September 2025. Despite having the possibility of remaining on the Supreme Court until he was 75, he chose to retire early.
Chaired by Dilma, the NDB is the New Development Bank, also known as the BRICS Bank.
