Retired man dies during attempted robbery at jewelry store in shopping mall in eastern São Paulo.
247 – This Saturday afternoon saw a shootout at the Metrô Itaquera shopping mall in the eastern zone of São Paulo. A retired sergeant from the Military Police was killed in a shootout following an attempted robbery at the Casa das Alianças jewelry store, around 13:20 PM. Another person was also shot, but the Military Police have not yet provided further details about the victim's condition.
According to information from the Military Police, the victim was a retired police officer and was not on duty at the time. He was taken to the Waldomiro de Paula Hospital, also in Itaquera, but did not survive his injuries.
Two men, suspected of being involved in the crime, were arrested, according to the São Paulo Public Security Secretariat. One of them was injured in the incident and taken to the same hospital as the victim, where he was detained by the police. The other tried to escape but was captured by the PM team that responded to the incident with the help of the Águia helicopter.
The Special Tactical Actions Group (GATE) was also called to the scene, as there was suspicion that the robbers possessed explosives and that these had been left at the location.
According to the Civil Police, no one else was involved in the attempted robbery. It was not reported whether any jewelry was taken from the store during the incident. According to the shopping mall's press office, the food court was cordoned off, but the stores are operating normally.
