Evangelical caucus attacks Lula with accusations of antisemitism and denies the genocide of the Palestinian people.
In a "statement of condemnation," Evangelical Fronts in Congress and the Senate assert that government actions should target Hamas.
247 - The Evangelical Parliamentary Fronts of the National Congress and the Federal Senate issued a joint statement this Friday (12), attacking President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) for his critical stance regarding Israel's actions in Palestine. The group went further, accusing Lula of antisemitism, in response to Brazilian government's support for South Africa's initiative to take the case to the International Court of Justice (ICJ).
The statement from the Parliamentary Fronts highlights an alleged concern about the distortion of the meaning of genocide and the international convention. on behalf of South Africa"Ignoring the horrors that plague the Palestinians, an action like this should target the terrorist group Hamas, as this is the group that has been committing genocides, day after day, such as the one that occurred on October 7, 2023, where it exterminated more than 1.400 innocent human beings (children, the elderly, women, teenagers, adults...)," the text says.
The statement emphasizes Israel's respect for its international commitments, but fails to mention the country's disproportionate response, which resulted in more than 58 deaths and 2,3 injuries, while 85% of Gaza's 23 million residents were forced to leave their homes.
