Following Trump's tariff hike, Jaques Wagner says it's "natural" for Brazil to seek new trade relationships.

Also on Wednesday, Trump presented the reciprocal global tariffs that will be charged by the US. The tariffs will be 10% for Brazil.

247 - The government leader in the Senate, Jaques Wagner, said on Wednesday (2) that he views “with concern” the decision by the President of the United States, Donald Trump, to impose a 10% tax on the import of Brazilian products. For the senator, the American move goes against the principles of economic multilateralism and harms “the whole world”.

Earlier, at an event at the White House, the Republican presented the reciprocal global tariffs that will be charged by the US. Trump announced tariffs of 49% for Cambodia, 46% for Vietnam, 34% for China, 32% for Taiwan, 31% for Switzerland, 30% for South Africa, 26% for India, 25% for South Korea, 24% for Japan, 20% for the European Union, 10% for Brazil, and 10% for the United Kingdom.

“If a country increases import tariffs, this will fall on the domestic consumer. It’s a logic of reversing globalization, as if to say, ‘now, each one takes care of its own border.’ It’s a belligerent logic,” the government leader said in a post on the social network X.

Wagner also emphasized that the tariff hike could encourage Brazil to seek new trade relations, mentioning the cases of Japan and Vietnam. Recently, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) traveled to both Asian countries to negotiate trade agreements and strengthen relations.

“If Brazilian products have difficulty entering the US, it’s natural for us to open other borders,” he wrote. “That’s what we did now in Japan and Vietnam, as I highlighted today in the Plenary, when giving an overview of the trip. There is a forecast there of several billion dollars in increased revenue for our country. And this won’t just happen with Brazil, but with any country in the world.”
