Following the repercussions of his statement, the vice-presidential candidate said he was misinterpreted and stressed that at no point did he refer to indigenous people or Africans in a derogatory way. He further stated that he is not racist, reinforced his indigenous origins, and said that "Brazilians need to know their origins, both for the good and the not-so-good things."
