Amoêdo criticizes governors' silence regarding sanctions against Moraes: 'These are not the kinds of politicians we need'
Criticism was directed at governors Tarcísio de Freitas, Ronaldo Caiado, Ratinho Jr., and Romeu Zema.
247 - Businessman João Amoêdo used social media to criticize the silence of governors Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicanos-SP), Ronaldo Caiado (União Brasil-GO), Ratinho Jr. (PSD-PR) and Romeu Zema (Novo-MG) regarding the application of the Magnitsky Act by the United States government against Supreme Federal Court (STF) Justice Alexandre de Moraes.
"Tarcísio, Caiado, Ratinho Jr., and Zema remain silent regarding the application of the Magnitsky Law against a Supreme Court Justice. Instead of defending Brazil's autonomy, our Constitution, and the enforcement of laws, the governors, fearing the loss of support from Bolsonaro voters, have chosen omission. After a posture of submission to Bolsonaro on numerous occasions, they are now demonstrating cowardice."
"These are not the kinds of politicians – incapable of leading and of putting principles above electoral calculations – that we need to preside over Brazil," Amoêdo wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
The United States government's sanctions against Minister Alexandre de Moraes were announced on July 30th, justifying the action by stating that the magistrate was involved in "oppressive censorship, arbitrary detentions that violate human rights, and politicized proceedings—including against former President Jair Bolsonaro." Bolsonaro is ineligible to run for office until 2030 and is a defendant in a criminal case before the Supreme Federal Court (STF) for his alleged participation in a coup plot.
President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) expressed solidarity with the Supreme Court Justice and described the interference of the US government in Brazilian justice as "unacceptable."
