Allies see 'mistakes' by Bolsonaro and Damares in the religious field and fear loss of votes.
Bolsonaro suffered a virtually unprecedented defeat on social media regarding the issue of religion.
247 - “Allies and interlocutors of President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) believe that he and Senator-elect Damares Alves (Republicanos-DF) made mistakes in the religious field in recent days, leading to a virtually unprecedented defeat on social media regarding religion, with more negative than positive mentions for the president,” points out an analysis by journalist Valdo Cruz, in his column on the G1 portal.
“With this, allies warn, the mistakes made by Bolsonaro and the former Minister of Human Rights could cost the President of the Republic votes in this final stretch of the second round. The assessment is that the behavior of the two has generated negative reactions among both Catholics and Evangelicals. A survey carried out by Quaest on social media on Wednesday (12) and Thursday (13) showed an unprecedented situation for the President of the Republic. Mentions on the subject of religion were much more negative than positive for Bolsonaro,” it points out.
The journalist recalls that “the president attended Aparecida on the Day of the Patron Saint of Brazil, Our Lady of Aparecida. On that occasion, supporters of the president caused a commotion near the basilica by harassing the press and booing Archbishop Dom Orlando Brandes. He, in his homily, said that it was necessary to defeat the dragon of lies and hatred.”
"Former minister Damares Alves attempted to justify statements she made at an evangelical church in early October, in which she reported having videos of children being sexually abused. Under pressure, she said she only spoke about what she heard from people on the street. Later, she claimed she couldn't reveal the documents because they were confidential, but investigative bodies say they haven't received anything related to the case reported by the senator-elect," it highlights.
