247 - The Minister of Mines and Energy, Alexandre Silveira, stated that the recent discovery by the British company BP in the Santos Basin represents "yet another demonstration of Brazil's leading role in the global energy sector." The statement was made during a press briefing. Energy ConnectionThis week, a production of the Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME) in partnership with Rádio Gov, revealed details of the new reserve discovered in the Bumirang block.

According to BP, this is the largest oil and natural gas discovery made by the company in the last 25 years. Located in a strategic area of the pre-salt layer, the Bumirang block was acquired in the first cycle of the permanent production sharing offer, held in 2022. The pioneering well that led to the discovery was drilled with the support of MME programs, such as... Boosts IPwhich aims to attract investment and structure the development of new fields.

According to Silveira, this achievement reinforces the importance of an energy policy based on predictability and security. "It is the result of a policy committed to legal certainty and long-term planning, ensuring that the riches of the pre-salt layer are transformed into social and economic development for the country," he stated.

New legislation toughens penalties for crimes in the electricity and telecommunications sectors. During the same bulletin, the enactment of new legislation signed by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva was highlighted. This legislation amends the Penal Code to increase penalties for crimes related to the theft, robbery, and receiving of stolen goods involving wires, cables, and equipment used in the generation and distribution of electricity, as well as devices aimed at protecting telecommunications.

Silveira highlighted that the new law responds to an urgent need in the sector given the growth of criminal practices that affect the stability of the National Interconnected System. "President Lula's initiative reinforces this government's commitment to energy security, the continuity of services, and the rigorous punishment of crimes of this nature in the country," he stated.

Natural gas: government seeks to facilitate the registration of traders - The bulletin also announced the publication of an informative note on August 1st, clarifying the use of the National Classification of Economic Activities (CNAE) code for registering the wholesale natural gas trading activity. This measure is part of the program. Gas to Use Its objective is to eliminate bureaucratic obstacles that hinder registration with state tax authorities.

The absence of a specific code has harmed companies and independent consumers seeking to operate legally in the sector. The expectation is that this note will help to make regulatory requirements applicable to other areas of the fuel supply chain more flexible, adapting them to the reality of natural gas trading.
