"An aggravation of democratic legitimacy," say members of audit courts regarding audio with coup-mongering statements by Augusto Nardes.

247 - The Association of Members of the Courts of Accounts of Brazil (Atricon), the National Council of Presidents of the Courts of Accounts (CNPTC), and the Rui Barbosa Institute (IRB) qualified the audio - obtained by Brazil 247 - in which the minister of the Federal Court of Accounts (TCU) Augusto Nardes made coup-like statements in a WhatsApp group. from agribusiness entrepreneurs as a "serious threat to democratic legitimacy and the legal order, in a context also incompatible with the actions of the Court of Auditors, which must have absolute fidelity to the governing rules."

“In a statement, the entities representing the presidents of the audit courts and other members of these bodies expressed their repudiation of Nardes's speech and reaffirmed the role of the Audit Courts 'in defending democracy and republican institutions, as well as their relevance in promoting good and correct governmental management'," it says. In the statement, Atricon and CNPCT also emphasize that the courts act "with independence and impartiality, in order to comply with and enforce the rules and principles established in the Brazilian Constitution, in light of the rule of law and the democratic regime."

On Monday (21), a day after the case gained national attention, Augusto Nardes released a statement. in which he does not deny authorship of the statements, but regrets the "interpretation" given to his message. He also filed a request for medical leavea logo after releasing the statement about the episode.
