247 - Retired General Augusto Heleno, former Minister of the Institutional Security Cabinet (GSI), says he is the target of an "absurdity" after being reported to the Attorney General's Office (PGR) for authorizing gold mining in an area adjacent to the Yanomami Indigenous Territory in Roraima.

The approval for the so-called prior consent, a necessary authorization for projects such as mining in the border area, was given by him on December 14, 2022. According to the documents that supported the release, the area is located in Iracema (RR), 7,8 km from the indigenous territory, reports the journalist. Monica Bergamo in Folha de S.Paulo.

Heleno was denounced to the Attorney General's Office by elected congresswoman Luciene Cavalcante (PSOL-SP), who accuses the general of failing to act in favor of protecting indigenous lands and even of encouraging illegal mining activity in the region.

The Bolsonaro-supporting general declined to comment on the matter, stating only that the accusation is so absurd it doesn't warrant further comment.
