Petrobras and Amazon reach agreement for low-carbon fuels.
Memorandum of Understanding foresees joint projects for low-emission fuels and more sustainable logistics solutions in Brazil.
247 - Petrobras and Amazon Brazil announced this Wednesday (1) the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to develop joint solutions for low-carbon fuels applied to the logistics sector. The objective is to integrate the expertise of the Brazilian state-owned company in energy with the environmental goals of the e-commerce giant, which seeks to zero its net emissions by 2040.
According to Petrobras, transportation is one of the sectors with the greatest potential for carbon reduction, and the collaboration with Amazon occurs in a context where companies from various segments are intensifying sustainable investments.
“The commitment is to invest in innovative, competitive, and affordable decarbonization alternatives. The partnership with Amazon seeks to generate relevant business opportunities for both companies, advancing the path of decarbonization and also generating gains for society and the environment,” stated Claudio Schlosser, Director of Logistics, Commercialization, and Markets at Petrobras.
Amazon highlighted that decarbonizing its transportation network is essential to achieving The Climate Pledge, a global pact co-founded by the company that sets the goal of carbon neutrality by 2040. “This MOU represents an important step towards achieving our net-zero emissions. We believe that low-carbon residual raw materials can transform waste into valuable energy resources, creating jobs and strengthening Brazil's energy independence,” said Ricardo Pagani, Head of Operations at Amazon Brazil.
Among the actions foreseen in the agreement are:
- Development of fuels certified by international sustainability standards, such as ISCC Plus;
- Pilot programs that integrate low-emission fuels into Amazon's logistics;
- Adoption of market mechanisms, such as Book and Claim and Mass Balance, to broaden access for small and medium-sized enterprises to the use of these fuels.
Diesel R: Petrobras' bet on low carbon emissions
Petrobras also highlighted its pioneering role in the development of Diesel R, a product with 5% renewable content obtained through co-processing at refineries in Paraná (Repar) and São Paulo (RPBC). The fuel can be used without modifications to engines and logistics chains, reducing emissions without compromising efficiency or safety.
With the expansion of the partnership and the arrival of new solutions, both Petrobras and Amazon seek to position themselves as protagonists in the energy transition in Brazil, reconciling economic growth with environmental responsibility.
