247 - The Parnaíba River, one of the most important waterways in the Northeast of Brazil, will be the target of a broad revitalization project coordinated by the Ministry of Integration and Regional Development (MIDR), with an investment of R$ 995 million from the Federal Government. The interventions are part of the national policy for the recovery of river basins under the New Growth Acceleration Program (PAC) and are scheduled to begin in 2025.

The proposal was unanimously approved by the responsible technical committee and promises to transform the environmental and socioeconomic landscape of the region encompassing the states of Piauí and Maranhão. The objective is twofold: to restore the river's ecosystem and to guarantee conditions for the return of river navigation, a long-standing demand of the local populations.

"A symbol of sustainable development," says Waldez Góes. The Minister of Integration and Regional Development, Waldez Góes, highlighted the strategic nature of the project. “This is a historic moment for Piauí and Maranhão, states directly involved in this initiative. The revitalization of the Parnaíba River will not only strengthen the environment, but will also boost navigability, generating significant social and economic benefits for the entire region,” stated the minister.

Góes emphasized that the initiative is part of a commitment by the Federal Government to regional integration: "Our commitment is to transform the Parnaíba River into a symbol of sustainable development and regional integration."

Navigability and environmental recovery - The revitalization of the Parnaíba River is part of a set of actions under the New PAC (Growth Acceleration Program) aimed at recovering the country's river basins, with a special focus on the semi-arid Northeast region. In addition to improving environmental conditions, the plan includes the restructuring of infrastructure necessary for the resumption of navigation—essential for river transport and the flow of local production.

According to the governor of Piauí, Rafael Fonteles, the project fulfills a long-standing desire of the population. "This is a great dream of the people of Piauí, which is becoming a reality thanks to the sensitivity of the Federal Government and the efforts of all partners," celebrated the state leader.

Parnaíba: the water heritage of the Northeast - The Parnaíba River, approximately 1,4 kilometers long, originates in the Serra da Tabatinga mountain range in southern Piauí and flows to the Atlantic Ocean, forming a natural border between the states of Piauí and Maranhão. It is the second largest river in the Northeast region of Brazil, playing a vital role as a source of water supply, a transportation route, an economic driver, and a geographical marker of regional identity.

With the planned investment, the expectation is that the river will regain its historical and economic importance, contributing decisively to improving the quality of life for thousands of riverside residents and boosting the local economy with environmental responsibility.
