247 - The city of São Paulo took another important step towards sustainable mobility. On the morning of this Wednesday (23), Mayor Ricardo Nunes delivered 120 new electric buses to the municipal transport system and announced the publication, by August, of a public call for bids for the supply of biomethane — a clean fuel that will also be incorporated into the fleet.

With this new delivery, the city of São Paulo now has 841 vehicles powered by clean energy, consolidating its position as the largest fleet of non-polluting buses in the country, according to the international platform E-Bus Radar. “This is a victory for the city of São Paulo. An additional 120 electric buses, which will save 35 liters of diesel per year and represent 6.400 trees annually. It is a very important step forward for the environment, to reduce respiratory illnesses, so that we can have a better city every day,” stated Mayor Ricardo Nunes during the delivery event at Praça Charles Miller, in the West Zone.

Each electric bus avoids, on average, the emission of 87 tons of CO₂ per year. With the 120 new vehicles, the estimated annual reduction reaches 10,4 tons of polluting gases. The models delivered are eBasic and ePadron 13m, with bodies from manufacturers Caio and Marcopolo, and technology supplied by BYD, Mercedes-Electra, Mercedes and Marcopolo.

The Municipal Secretary of Mobility and Transportation, Celso Caldeira, highlighted the city's leading role. "São Paulo is a national benchmark in clean mobility. This investment demonstrates the administration's commitment to decarbonizing the fleet and improving air quality for the population," he stated.

The new vehicles feature air conditioning, Wi-Fi, and USB ports for charging mobile devices. The service will be operated by five concessionaires: Nortebuss, Transcap, Mobibrasil, Sambaíba, and Alfa Rodobus, circulating in four regions of the city: Northwest, West, South, and North.

The project was made possible with financial support from the National Bank for Economic and Social Development (BNDES), which financed 69 buses, and Caixa Econômica Federal, which financed the other 51. According to Secretary Caldeira, seven pilot projects are ready to install their own charging stations (BES) in municipal garages, expanding the energy autonomy of the system.
