Join forces. Which forces?

"The union of all forces at this time means that the struggle must be unified. Fractioning or isolating the issues weakens the struggle. The struggle is common to all true democrats," writes columnist Vivaldo Barbosa, regarding an alliance against Bolsonaro.

Whenever faced with the challenge of organizing a national resistance struggle or seeking new directions, the natural impulse is to gather as many forces as possible to confront it.

At this current moment, when we are seeking to gather forces to resist the authoritarian attacks of Bolsonaro and his entire group, and to prepare for the conquest of power in the next elections, it is always advisable that all those who oppose the current government should unite.

We cannot lose sight of the nature of the current political struggle. It is one of resistance to Bolsonaro's authoritarian attacks, to the dismantling of the State that his government is carrying out, destroying invaluable and strategic assets, and cutting the rights of the Brazilian people.

Resistance to Bolsonaro's authoritarian attacks has been victorious so far. The damage he has done in this area has not been so great, except for one or two measures here and there. Fundamental freedoms have been exercised and the democratic process has followed its course. It is evident that threats persist on the horizon; vigilance is necessary.

In the area of rights, our people have been severely impacted. Labor and social security reforms have sought to destroy the social protection system of labor legislation and Social Security implemented by labor movements, which, for better or worse, have guaranteed a minimum of benefits. The inaction and even irresponsible actions of the government in combating the coronavirus pandemic violate the fundamental rights of the Brazilian people to access healthcare, as guaranteed by the Constitution. Delays in education compromise the advancement of knowledge and science.

The dismantling of the State aims to weaken the Republic as an instrument for confronting economic groups, especially those from abroad. Voting and elections become less significant, as instruments for realizing the popular will are weakened. Public services are handed over to economic groups. Immense portions of the national patrimony are given to these groups. The dismantling of Banco do Brasil, Caixa Econômica, and BNDES causes serious damage to our economy and the possibilities for our development. The mutilation of Petrobras leaves our immense pre-salt reserves in the hands of oil companies, and we lose instruments for the advancement of national industry. The tolerance and even encouragement of devastation in the Amazon violates all interests of strategic occupation of the Amazon by Brazil and causes damage to our image and our international interests.

Added to this is a foreign policy of submission and alienation of our sovereignty, causing Brazil to lose its position in the world in a subservient manner to the United States, which even mocks and ridicules the pettiness of the current Brazilian government.

The union of all forces at this time means that the struggle must be unified. Fractioning or isolating the issues weakens the struggle.

The struggle is common to all true democrats. It must unite laborism, which provided the best that Brazil has to offer: labor legislation and Social Security, strategic state-owned companies, organized the National State, forged developmentalism to overcome backwardness, Brizola's educational project; Lulaism, with its policies to overcome misery and poverty; socialists in general; and true social democrats, not those who carry the name in name but are neoliberal in essence.

It's pointless to try to unite personalities, party acronyms, and political movements from above. The fundamental thing is to incorporate the Brazilian people into the struggle, to win back those who were vilely deceived and switched sides. To do this, it's necessary to address the issues that affect our people's lives. Otherwise, we'll be like in the Diretas Já campaign, where someone with media support comes along and deceives our people again, like Collor in the "hunter of maharajas" coup, or Fernando Henrique Cardoso in the Real Plan coup, or Bolsonaro in the coup of corruption, violence, and family.

The unity belongs to the Brazilian people in their historic march against colonialism and slavery, which still torment us, as they did in electing Getúlio, Juscelino, Jango, Lula twice, and Dilma twice.

The current resistance is preparation for the electoral struggle, the only one in which our people are the main actors and can recover everything and change course, because the struggle is for democracy, for rights, for sovereignty.
