Temer is Collor, Dilma is Itamar.
Collor was sold to the nation as the hunter of corrupt officials. His party was the National Reconstruction Party. Temer was sold as the savior of the nation. He still says his government is one of national salvation. The impeachment fell on Dilma, but what we see is that she is as honest as Itamar.
As the sham impeachment trial progresses and the truths of Lava Jato emerge, it becomes clear that Temer is becoming more and more like Collor, and Dilma more and more like Itamar.
Collor was the youngest president; Temer is the oldest. Collor was sold to the nation as the hunter of corrupt officials. His party was the National Reconstruction Party. He came after the horrendous Sarney government. Which was true.
Temer was sold as the savior of the nation. He still claims his government is one of national salvation. He came after Dilma's government, which was said to have bankrupted the country. That's a lie.
Dilma was impeached, but what we see is that she is just as honest as Itamar.
The impeachment didn't stick to Temer, but what we see is that he lies every day – just like Collor – and tries to destroy the Brazilian state – like Collor. And he's surrounded by corrupt people, just like Collor.
And corruption is getting closer and closer to him.
The impeachment against Collor was a national consensus. It was obvious. No one doubted his crimes against public funds, which still weigh heavily on him today.
Dilma's impeachment is a glass with no substance; it becomes clearer every day that everyone is wasting time on baseless accusations. The so-called "fiscal maneuvers," as they became known, were perfectly legal and caused no harm. Any international tribunal would reach this conclusion in much less time and with less damage. What causes harm is not the actions that were the target of the impeachment, but the process itself, which instilled uncertainty in the economy and investments and left the country in this exasperating wait until "something happens."
Collor was a talented orator and Temer is a mediocre orator, but there are more similarities between him and Collor than between Dilma and Collor.
Just like Itamar, who had no spouse, Dilma has no spouse. Just like Collor, Temer has a younger, blonde, beautiful, demure, and domestic wife.
Collor's party was the smallest in the country, but he is much more similar to Temer, who leads the largest – and worst – party in the country.
Temer is right-wing, like Collor. Temer was born in the richest state in the country, and Collor in one of the poorest. But both behave like political bosses.
Itamar was center-left, he was from Minas Gerais, just like Dilma, who in her youth was far-left, but never imposed that orientation in government.
And she is much more like Itamar than she is like Collor. In fact, she doesn't resemble Collor at all.
Collor was Globo's darling, but when his dark side was revealed, Globo destroyed him.
Temer came to power with the help of Globo, which helped to overthrow Dilma, but now that Lava Jato is closing in on him, Globo is bringing him down.
Globo never fell in love with Itamar, just as it never fell in love with Dilma.
But he realized that Itamar had higher approval ratings than Collor, and he realizes that Dilma already has higher approval ratings than Temer.
Collor robbed the country, destroyed culture and cinema, the same script adopted by Temer, who robs workers' rights, attacks culture, destroys state television, lays off people, and cuts funding.
Cornered, Collor had to resign. Cornered by Lava Jato, Temer seems to have no other option but to resign.
Nobody missed Collor, nobody will miss Temer.
The country misses Itamar, just as it misses Dilma.
