Supreme Court will arrest Bolsonaro for obstructing justice.

"What determines the necessity of imprisonment is the amount of evidence against him - and its strength," says Eduardo Guimarães.

After the discovery of Bolsonaro's illegal spending on the corporate credit card and that he lied about using the instrument for personal promotion, all linked to his flight from the country in December—a flight that has now become undeniable—the Supreme Court is legally obligated to order his arrest.

Bolsonaro lied about the corporate credit card; he said he didn't use it. However, data was found showing the use of the card, even for electoral purposes by the then-President of the Republic, in addition to the use of a front man, a friend of Michelle Bolsonaro, to launder public money spent on these expenses.

Arresting Bolsonaro is not only mandatory, it's urgent. He has been saying he will not return to Brazil. Thus, there is already proof of obstruction of justice. But what determines the imperative need for the former president's arrest is the amount of evidence against him – and its strength.

Evidence 1 -- Bolsonaro lied about the date of his departure for the US in order to flee while he was president, so that they could not stop him.

Evidence 2 -- Bolsonaro's military aide withdrew money from the Presidency's corporate credit card and laundered these amounts using the credit card of a friend of Michelle Bolsonaro in order to finance his personal promotion (motorcycle rides) with public money.

Evidence 3 -- Invoices from the credit card of Michelle's friend, used to pay for illegal expenses that could not be made with the corporate card, were paid by the Presidential Palace.

Evidence 4 -- The Supreme Court already has audio recordings of Bolsonaro's voice proving that he knew everything.

It is clear that the announcement of the extradition request is only awaiting the resolution of the military insubordination issue.

The now former Army commander was already in the crosshairs of the Lula government after disrespecting the President of the Republic, the Minister of Justice, and refusing to comply with an order to remove Bolsonaro's aide-de-camp, who was involved in the corporate credit card scandal. Furthermore, the "High Command" of the Armed Forces will soon appoint new four-star generals, and there is concern within the government and the Supreme Federal Court that this could lead to the promotion of Bolsonaro's coup-plotting supporters.

The Supreme Court understands that arresting Bolsonaro now, while necessary and urgent due to the risk of another escape, would hinder the end of insubordination within those sectors of the Armed Forces that could still threaten democracy. However, there is certainty that the strength of the evidence will prevent impunity.

Arresting Jair Messias Bolsonaro is therefore only a matter of time. It's a way to discourage the use of the Presidency for criminal purposes. Otherwise, other Bolsonaros will emerge.
